31 January 2013 – More than 140 people attended South Hook Gas’s first major event since its launch party at Banqueting House in 2009. The venue this time though was newer and higher and guests got to enjoy the views from The Shard, Western Europe’s highest building, in advance of its official opening to the public.

Amongst the dignitaries attending the event were a number of parliamentarians including Charles Hendry, former UK Minister of Energy & Climate Change, officials from the State of Qatar Embassy, South Hook Gas customers and industry partners as well as a leading energy academics and journalists.

In his speech, Rashid Al-Marri, Director and General Manager of South Hook Gas, highlighted the company’s contribution to UK energy security. Since commencing operations, South Hook Gas has imported more than 280 LNG cargoes, making it the UK’s largest LNG importer and one of the largest in Europe.

He concluded, “The success of our business is determined by the strength of our relationships with our key stakeholders and our teams. This event at The Shard was a great way for us to remind everyone of all that we have achieved so far and to thank each of you for your contribution to that success.”

Mr Al-Marri speaking at the event

Also speaking at the event was Irvine Sellar, the man behind The Shard. Mr Al-Marri congratulated him on the successful development of the project which for him symbolises the growing relationship between the UK and Qatar, particularly in the areas of trade and investment, and education and training. Indeed, he estimated that total Qatari investments in the UK, including South Hook Gas and The Shard, are now worth more than £10bn.

9 October 2012 – South Hook Gas has signed a framework agreement with Noble Clean Fuels Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Noble Group (“Noble”), for access to spare LNG import capacity at the South Hook Terminal.

South Hook Gas already delivers gas to ExxonMobil Gas Marketing Europe and Total Gas & Power, and, additionally, has regasification services agreements with ConocoPhillips, EGL (now Axpo), Chevron and Trafigura.

Rashid Al-Marri, General Manager at South Hook Gas said, “We’ve said since starting operations that we wanted to help improve supply diversity and competition in the UK energy market. We’re now supplying more gas into the UK than any other LNG shipper and by signing new access agreements such as this one with Noble, we’re fulfilling our promises.”

“We are pleased to sign this agreement, allowing us to unload LNG volumes destined for the UK downstream gas market, where we are already managing physical gas flows with assets such as the Holford underground gas storage facility. This contract adds to Noble’s portfolio of flexible assets across the shipping, supply, regasification and marketing elements of the LNG value chain in both the Atlantic and Pacific basins,” said Alejandro Sanchez Gestido, Global Head of LNG at Noble.

South Hook Gas has supplied gas every day into the UK market since commencing operations in 2010, helping to improve security of supply. In little more than two years, the company has grown rapidly and can supply around 20% of the UK’s gas needs.

Natural gas is a flexible and safe energy source that can provide reliable back-up to intermittent renewable energy supplies such as wind and solar. As one of the cleanest burning hydrocarbons, it can also help the UK to achieve its greenhouse gas emissions targets as it has lower emissions than both coal and oil.

One of the key conference discussions focused around whether the UK was an attractive market for gas imports with comments from Statoil on the pipeline perspective with South Hook Gas giving the LNG importers view. Mr Al-Marri gave an overview of the development of the UK LNG sector and its positive contribution to UK energy security, competition and the UK Government’s plans to decarbonise the economy. He then outlined some of the future trends in natural gas and LNG, particularly in the road transport and marine sectors.

He finished by expressing his view that the UK continues to be an attractive long-term market but that the Government needs to do more to encourage the investment required to upgrade the gas and power systems.

Fahad Al-Subaiey, South Hook Gas Chairman said, “South Hook Gas now supplies more gas into the UK than any other LNG shipper and this agreement with RasGas gives us the opportunity to receive additional cargoes in future, helping to improve supply diversity.”

“This agreement marks the latest addition to RasGas’ growing portfolio in the European market. As Europe continues to work towards meeting CO2 emissions targets whilst meeting energy needs, we are seeing more interest in LNG as a clean fuel,” said Khalid Sultan R Al-Kuwari, Marketing and Shipping Executive at RasGas.

18 September 2012 – The UK Ambassador to Qatar, Michael O’Neill, recently made a fact-finding visit to South Hook LNG Terminal in Wales. The visit was hosted by two companies; South Hook Gas, which imports LNG and manages the terminal’s capacity and commercial arrangements, and South Hook LNG – the company responsible for the operation of the terminal.

During his time there, the Ambassador learned about the important role that Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) has played in meeting the UK’s energy needs, with almost a quarter of the natural gas delivered to the UK in 2011 coming from Qatar.

After meeting members of the management teams of the two companies, the Ambassador was taken on a tour of the facility, based at the Port of Milford Haven, where operational reliability is underpinned by the highest of safety standards. The tour included an iintroduction to the terminal’s central control room, where the LNG and natural gas flows are managed, and viewing the jetty and unloading facilities.

Commenting on his visit, Michael O’Neill, UK Ambassador to Qatar said: “I was delighted to travel to South Wales to visit the South Hook LNG Terminal, having seen the other end of the supply chain at Ras Laffan in Qatar a few weeks ago. The terminal’s importance to UK energy security was reflected in the presence at its opening in 2009 of His Highness the Emir of Qatar and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth. South Hook Terminal’s efficient, high-tech systems and environmentally-sensitive design, located in a spectacular part of the British coastline, are an excellent symbol of the flourishing partnership between the UK and Qatar.”

Rashid Al-Marri, General Manager of South Hook Gas said: “I’d like to thank The Ambassador for taking the time to visit South Hook LNG Terminal, particularly so soon after his appointment. His visit highlights the importance of the long-term relationship between Qatar and the UK.”

6th September 2011 – South Hook Gas has signed a framework agreement with Chevron Products UK Limited (Chevron) for access to spare LNG import capacity at the South Hook Terminal.

The company already delivers gas to ExxonMobil Gas Marketing Europe and has regasification services agreements with Total Gas & Power, ConocoPhillips, EGL and Trafigura.

Rashid Al-Marri, General Manager at South Hook Gas said, “We’ve said since starting operations that we wanted to help improve security and competition in the UK energy market. We’re now supplying more gas into the UK than any other LNG shipper and by signing new access agreements such as this one with Chevron, we’re fulfilling our promises.”

“Chevron is pleased to enter into this agreement with South Hook Gas,” said Gregor Cameron, General Manager of Chevron Natural Gas Europe. “The agreement provides Chevron with the flexibility to bring LNG into the United Kingdom when opportunities arise.”

South Hook Gas has supplied gas every day into the UK market since commencing operations in 2010, helping to improve security of supply. In little over a year, the company has grown rapidly and can supply around 20% of the UK’s gas.

LNG is a flexible and safe energy source that can provide reliable back-up to intermittent renewable energy supplies such as wind and solar. As one of the cleanest burning hydrocarbons, natural gas can also help the UK to achieve its greenhouse gas emissions targets as it produces around 50% less CO2 than coal.
