Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) is natural gas which has been converted to a liquid by cooling it to a temperature of minus 160°C.
In its liquid form, it occupies about 600 times less space than as a gas - and can therefore be easily stored in tanks, or pumped into ships and transported across the seas.
This volume reduction permits cost effective transportation of LNG over long distances.

As the UK's domestic sources of natural gas decline, imported LNG will become an increasingly important source of clean and reliable energy.
LNG
is stored in single and double-walled tanks with extremely efficient
insulation. It can be quickly and easily turned back into natural gas
and delivered to the UK's homes via the national grid pipeline.
